The Lobi

The Lobi people occupy the southwestern part of Burkina Faso. The tribes had emigrated from Ghana in the last quarter of the 18th century.

The Lobi do not carve masks, they do carve very individualistic figurative statuary known as bateba; these figures are placed at sacred altars. Bateba figures have a status between supernatural beings and humans.

The Lobi produce a great variety of stools and slingshots, these are adorned by human or animal figures.

Renowned for their extreme superstition, the Lobi are known to wear various types of protective amulets. They are skilled metalworkers and produce a great variety of jewelry, in the form of amulets and talismans taking the form of serpents, chameleon and bush spirit figures.
