The Dogon

The Dogon inhabit the Bandiagara escarpment, in Mali, an extremely imposing setting in a very bare and austere environment. The cliffs stretch some 150 km. in length and reach heights of up to 500 meters.

>> They are one of the very few existing ethnic groups of Africa to have remained closest to their ancestral traditions, both in artistic expression as well as in ceremonial practice.

>> Dogon art is primarily expressed in the form of statuary and masks. Sculptures are not intended to be displayed publicly, but instead are kept in sacred sanctuaries within the family compound or gina.

>> Masks are the focal point of ceremonial celebrations, knowledge of their true symbolism and meaning is held by the highest-ranking cult members. It is during during village rituals and ceremonies that the significance and role of the various masks are defined and shared.

>> The Dogon are also known for their iron-smiting skills, ironsmiths form an exclusive caste; they create tools and weapons, as well as ceremonial objects that are used during important rituals and are also the carvers of ritual masks.
