The Gurunsi

The Gurunsi occupy the southwestern part of Burkina Faso; neighbors of the Mossi, they emigrated from northern Ghana in the 15th century and speak the Voltaic language.

>> The Nuna, Winiama, Nunuma, Léla, Sisala, Kaséna, Nankana, Kusasé are smaller tribes that are often grouped under the term “Gurunsi.”

>> Most known for their masks highlighted by large concentric eyes and representing bush spirits, the Gurunsi have inspired themselves from the masks of the Bwa; their statuary, less common and known, is used in divination rituals.
